　　约翰·史密斯（布莱德·彼得饰）和简·史密斯（安吉莉娜·朱莉饰）是一对让人羡慕的平常夫妇，自从5、6年前在哥伦比亚相遇，两个俊男美女就一直过着平静的生活。不过生活也许太过平静，两人都觉得婚姻就快像坟墓，以至于连婚姻心理医生都不能解决他们之间的缝隙。
　　不过，很快史密斯夫妇就开始发现了生活中的新激情。两人出乎意料地频频受到杀手攻击，而又都惊险地化险为夷，原来，彼此尊重的他们从来不知道对方的工作秘密--夫妇两人同为传奇性杀手，训练有素、杀人技巧高超，关键在于他们还为两家对头组织执行任务。
　　这对完美的间谍夫妻档，最近惊险连环便是因为同时接到了最新任务—刺杀彼此，两人的骄傲与职业道德让刺杀行动节节升级。在经历一连串的“意外”事件之后，史密斯夫妇都明白自已被锁定成暗杀目标，而深爱的对方便是此次的对头。旗鼓相当、深深相爱的他们将如何拼命杀死目标呢？

　　《史密斯行动》算得上是道格·里曼对于香港动作片一次诚意颇高的致敬，他和其他老外一样，只是肤浅地停留在感慨中国功夫为何如此出神入化的表面：“香港影片中的动作场面实在是优雅得让人难以置信，有时候完全不像是一场你死我亡的决斗，在踢球、睡觉甚至是吃饭的空档，就已经决出了胜负。为了给史密斯夫妇的婚姻和身份之间构架一个平衡点，我特别为他们安排了一场‘舞蹈格斗’：传统舞曲散发出一种蛊惑人心的浪漫气氛，非传统的格斗正好体现的是两个人之间剑拔弩张的对立情绪。”
　　里曼认为，不能单靠演员的表演来支撑史密斯夫妇颇有戏剧性的人物关系，他们周遭的事物也应该具有某种暗示，而他们位于近郊的房子就成了现成的“道具”：那里不只是一个能够衣食住行的空间，而是处处暗示着危险到涉于毁灭的婚姻关系，他们的生活有着太多的秘密、谎言和倦怠。房子在设计上非常奢华，样式复杂且极具空间概念，却生硬缺少温暖和灵魂，更像是一处做秀场，而不是一个家。即使在这所房子生活了六年，但里面却仍有约翰和简各自不曾触及的空间，那些隐秘不易发现的“暗格”，象征着住在这里的人的真实身份－－约翰看起来稀松平常的工具棚，却有着一个地窖大小的隐藏空间，里面是成堆的现金、火箭筒、手榴弹以及各类手枪；而简那作为主妇必备的高级烤箱，其实也是一处高科技武器的秘密储藏室……直到约翰和简对自己的真实身份摊牌，这所象征着不和谐关系的房屋也随之被夷为平地。影片看似是两个训练有素的王牌杀手之间的一场死亡游戏，其实他们最后却要面对许多已婚的人需要面对的问题：浓情蜜意随着时间变成了厌倦和欺骗，共同生活在一个屋檐下，却没有了灵魂的交流。约翰和简都拥有平凡人可望不可及的高超本领，但他们为之争斗的，不是置对方于死地，而是如何和另一个人生活一辈子。
