       故事讲述一家三代在各种时代背景下的艰难曲折，通过这个家庭从19世纪早期到1880年代半个世纪的迁徙经历，描述美国西部历史。他们从纽约出发，经历了内战，淘金热，路遇印第安人和西南部的流放者，经历各种艰难险阻，终于到达西部，并联合其他开拓者在平原上修建了铁路，把法律与正义也带到了边疆。
